The need to write – A thought on the website’s anniversary

I have had this website for three years today. I like to think it has some use to the general public, particularly the book section, but I don’t know. I should reach the 10,000 official hit mark some time today. I get more hits from people looking for pictures of Kate Barlow right now, and for a while I was getting at least one a day from someone looking for pictures of knives. The book section is looked at on occasion, and it reminds me of how many, and how few, books I’ve read.

I know my mom likes to look at my website. She likes to see the pictures so she’s knows what’s going on with me. And the calendar and all the write ups do that too. It doesn’t seem like my friends look at it that often though. Maybe I should put up more pictures of them.

But I almost think the whole site, and especially the blog recently, are for me. It’s great for me to get all of my random thoughts out of my head. I’ve been a journal keeper for a long time, but the things I put here don’t always seem like things I would put in a journal. I consider them more short essays on life. These are my random “ah-ha” moments or my frustrations. It’s nice to get them out to look at them.

In one of my classes we are discussing metacognition right now. It’s being aware of your thought process. And as I think about it, writing for so long has probably helped me to become rather metacognitive. There are other factors as well, but writing out my thoughts allows me to look at them closer. When I write a thought down I have to trace where it came from, and I can easier see where it is going. I love writing. I love examining my brain like that.
