Last March Brett bought me the boxed set of M*A*S*H. We are almost through with season 7 at this point (we had to stop and watch a season of Chuck at least once during that time).
This past week we watched the Christmas episode from season 7, “Dear Sis.” The cast sings “Dona Nobis Pacem” as an a cappella choir for Father Mulcahy.
Dona nobis pacem – Grant us peace.
As Brett and I have decided we will start studying Latin in the new year, all things Latin catch our ears now, so we had to look it up. Brett found this version of the song on youtube that we really love.
I love the simplicity of it. Both the music and the words. One simple phrase repeated over and over. One simple plea for peace. It is not a desperate fretful plea, but there is a strong desire in it simply by its repetition.
At Christmas, and always, may God grant us peace in our hearts.
Mom sang that yesterday in church.
I think that’s the first time Latin has ever been spoken in Kentucky. :brett:
I thought is was a pretty comon song, but no one had ever heard of it. We sang it in the fifth grade. Since then it’s been a favorite of mine.
Next time I sing that song in church I need a dress with big floaty silver sleeves.
I changed this comment from Papa G to Mama G because I’m pretty sure Papa G won’t be singing it in a dress with any kind of sleeves. Let me know if I’m wrong and I’ll change it back. 😉
I had never heard that before and it is simply gorgeous. You don’t need to understand Latin to know how beautiful it is.
Adding this to my Songs to Learn list!
You do already have the appropriate outfit.
