Knit together

My dad taught me how to knit when I was in middle school. I knit a hat and scarf. My grandma taught my dad how to knit. It’s a fun way that we are all connected. I’m not a great knitter, but I do enjoy it. It’s a very portable hobby. I love to sew, but I can’t exactly take my sewing machine on the bus with me the way I can take my knitting needles. This month I’ve even been attempting double pointed needles. And after I got over feeling like I was going to poke my eye out or stab myself in the hand and wondering if being better with chopsticks wouldn’t help with knitting, I think I’ve actually got it figured out. Knitting connects me to my grandma.

My mom says that my hands remind her of her mom. Grandma’s hands would get real cold before she’d get up to lead the music in church. My hands get frigid at times as well. My mom also used to sing all kinds of silly songs with her mom. And my mom sang a lot of those same songs with me. It helps me feel connected to my grandma.

Both of my grandmas served in the Relief Society for many years. When I was called to be the Relief Society president of my ward in 2006 I thought of them and how we had that in common.

Both of my grandmas died when I was still very young. But there are so many ways that they are a part of my life, so many things about who I am and what I do that connects me with them. My family is knit together eternally and I look forward to swapping stories with them some day about my cold hands, knitting, baking bread, and singing songs.
