Orion is rising again. He’s always very comforting to me, possibly my favorite constellation. And it’s more than the fact that he’s easy to recognize. He’s the only constellation I’ve been able to see my whole life. Although for a year and a half he was standing on his head.
Normally you look towards the southern sky in the fall to see Orion. When I was in Brasil, if I looked as far north in the sky as I could, I could see him. He’d just be upside down. There was something about knowing the same stars were over me that was very connecting for me.
That upside down thing had me confused for almost a year when I was in Brasil though, especially because the moon was also upside down from what I expected. I had never consciously paid attention to what direction the moon’s phases went before, but I knew that something was not right with it down there. When I figured it out, all was right in the world again.
I can’t look up at the heavens and not be in awe of their majesty. These are some amazing photos of the wonders of the heavens that were put up on Astronomy Photo of the Day recently. Just how amazing are the heavens!?
There was a Simpson’s episode where the U.S. embassy in Australia manufactured toilets that would swirl clockwise in order to make their American constituency feel more at home. I wonder if they could do something like that with the planets too? :turtle:
I kind of like that they were upside down. It was just a different view. It’s a feeling of connection to know that it’s the same for everyone, but we all just see it in a different way.
