Most people erroneously assume that Halloween is one of my favorite holidays. I enjoy dressing up, but I find many different opportunities to do so all throughout the year. I enjoy candy, particularly chocolate, but I don’t need a set holiday to find reason for that. A Tuesday is reason enough to eat chocolate.
For various reasons, I did not buy any candy to hand out yesterday. I actually went for my run later in the evening so I ended up not being home for about an hour during the trick-or-treat time anyway. But as I was running, I tried to figure out what the point of trick-or-treating is anyway. I think it’s kind of pointless. Why go door-to-door getting candy you probably don’t like, when you can just go to the store and buy the kind you really do like? And with things getting more and more scary all the time, you can buy candy you trust. Sure, it’s fun to dress up and show off your costumes, but that’s what parties are for.
By the end of my run I’d almost decided I don’t think my kids will go trick-or-treating. I’ll dress them up and go visit friends, but I don’t think they need to go bother random neighbors. I don’t know that I’ll buy candy to give to random people who knock on my door either. There were some kids standing at my door when I got home from my run, and they walked right up to me with their bags held out before I’d even gotten to my door. I thought that was very rude.
Meh. I just don’t understand Halloween I guess.
